Sheep Without a Shepherd

PASSING OF THE PEACE:

QUESTION: If you were to be an animal,

what kind of animal would you be?

NOTICE THE ANSWER has to do with definition of the animal

QUESTION: If you were going to be a human

what kind of human would you be?

NOTICE THE ANSWER: has to do with definitIon of what kind of human

INTRO TO SCRIPTURE: Matthew 9:35ff

The mission of Jesus is to focus on reaching people everywhere he goes. Where Jesus goes, people gather.

QUESTION: Do we emulate Jesus?

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 9:35 - 38

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had COMPASSION on them,

NOTE: The ministry of Jesus was driven by compassion. His compassion was love driven (Greatest and Second Greatest Commandment).

OBSERVATION: Jesus is aware that people are in need.

QUESTION: Are we emulating Jesus’ awareness of seeing the need?

36b because they were harassed and helpless,

NOTE: “harassed” literally means “torn.”

QUESTION: When you see the crowds, what do you see?

When you are in worship, what do you see?

POINT:Jesus had compassion on them because they were “harassed&helpless.”

36b LIKE A SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.

POINT #1: Sheep are lost without a shepherd.

LOST: Ever feel lost?

Amazing Grace, “Once was lost, but now am found”

Definition of LOST:

Luke 15: Lost coin, sheep and son

Lost is lacking a relationship of God

ONE REASON TO BE LOST: Lack of BOUNDARIES

When we fail to set good boundaries (not knowing who we are authentically)

we risk being lost.

POINT #2 Sheep without a shepherd are in need of a shepherd

QUESTION: Why don’t they have a shepherd (leader)?

SCRIPTURE: Numbers 27: - Joshua to Succeed Moses

15 Moses said to the LORD, 16 "May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd." 18 So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him.

POINT: Moses was concerned that the with his death, the people would not have a leader, they would be like sheep without a shepherd. They would not know where they were going, or who they are.

QUESTION: Who is your shepherd?

implication: who are shepherd is, identifies who we are.

if Jesus is our shepherd, then we are his sheep and we follow him.

IMPLICATION: if we do not know who we are, and who are leader is, then we will become lost, like sheep without a shepherd.

THUS: Failure to set good boundaries = like sheep lost without a shepherd.

QUESTION: Each of us are driven by something within us. As we define who we are we become more aware of what is driving us in our decision making process. The more we grow spiritually, the more we too are driven by compassion and love. It is crucial as we continue in ministry to know ourselves (define who we are and who we are not) and who we follow as shepherd.

V 37

“the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.

NOTE: The mission of Jesus is not a solitary mission.

IMPLICATION: we are to be trained to emulate Jesus (discipleship)

OBSERVATION: According to Jesus, Christianity is more than proclaiming and teaching, it is doing. Action speaks louder than words.

THOUGHT TO PONDER:

At all times preach the gospel, when necessary use words. St Francis Of Assisi

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE (Katherine)

Object Lesson: Jack-o-lantern

Point: Jesus cleans out all the disgusting stuff and puts a light in us

Question: Why is there disgusting stuff in there? The result of some choices?

CALL TO WORSHIP

You know you are having a bad day,

When the bird singing outside your window is a buzzard

OPENING PRAYER

Lord, the buzzards are circling. And, they are not flying south for the winter.

They are waiting to feed upon our infirmities. Send help. amen.

INTRO

Do you know anyone who is having one of those days?

People may avoid them like the plague?

Or worse yet, they’re circling because of the easy pickin’s.

IN THE NEWS

Are there any examples?

Thursday Night, Dodger Stadium, Joe Toree left the pitcher in when he was tired and 5 runs scored. Where the buzzards circling the next day?

Notre Dame vs USC: Interviewer & the coach (Charlie Weis)

“how do you feel?” (that poor guy) “He has never beaten USC”

IN THE SCRIPTURES:

Are there any examples?

Luke 7:36? (woman who anoints Jesus) the eyes were upon her

(Job) the eyes of his “friends” were upon him

(Jonah) the eyes of himself were upon him

US

Have you ever experienced a moment, that when you enter the room, all eyes are upon you? Your world is crumbling and the buzzards are circling? (Harper Valley PTA moment). Some people have the gift of being a predator. Do you know any buzzards? They can smell death. They wait upon our lifeless lives to fall to the ground. There the ones that like to kick people when they are down? And when we are down, we may sometimes wonder why we ever befriended them? Unfortunately sometimes these buzzards are family members. They are like buzzards circling above our heads. And they are family members, not respecting the no-fly zone of the sanctuary of family and relationship and home.

PROBLEM

No matter how fortunate you are. No matter how much money you have and how big your house is and how cool your car is, we don’t have protection against the oncoming CRISIS and the buzzards who feast upon our “infirmities.”

Science tells us our world is decaying (entropy).

GOOD NEWS

If you are here this morning and your world makes no sense and your world is crumbling. And like Humpty Dumpty there are broken pieces everywhere. And the buzzards are waiting to feast upon the pieces and crumbs; the GOOD NEWS is that you don’t have to be one that crumbs. You can regain control of your world.

INTRO TO SCRIPTURE

Purpose in Life: RELATIONSHIP

Method: LOVE DRIVEN

PASSING OF THE PEACE

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 6:21 Where your heart is, so is your treasure

QUESTION: Where is your treasure?

What is the most important thing in your life?

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

POINT: The purpose of life is RELATIONSHIP.

Not relationship to material things (not the size of your bank roll,

home, car; but the size of your heart)

It is GOD and OTHERS that are the treasure in our lives.

QUESTION: This passage forces the question:

What is the most important thing in your life?

As important this question is, I sometimes wonder if I refrain from putting to much serious energy into answering it. Sure, I can answer it with the proper answer, but what really is the real answer? If I am going to be authentic about my life, do i trust that I know what is the most important thing in my life? How would i even determine the answer? How would i know if i am deceiving myself?

Perhaps an indicator of the most important thing in my life is to ask those who observe my life. Maybe they know what is the most important thing in my life through observing my actions. do my actions proclaim what is truly important to me? Can one look at you and they know what is the most important thing in my life?

What in particular about my actions indicate the important thing in my life? Is through an observation of how I devote my resources (time, energy and money) to the most important thing in life? Is it how i choose to spend most of my time? Do i spend any time reflecting on the most important? Or, what do i spend most of my time reflecting on?

Wouldn't it be a bummer to live one's life thinking that the most important thing in one's life is one particular thing and then discovering at the end of one's life, that one was not truly devoted to it after all?

SCRIPTURE TO PONDER

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:21

OBSERVATION: I spend my resources on my treasure (my heart is spent on it).

POINT: God is to be our treasure.

MOVIE: Treasure of Sierra Madre

SYNOPSIS: Bogart was down on his luck (“Fellow american” a meal?)

Old Prospector convinced him to go after the treasure (gold)

Question: How much is “enough?”

4th Prospector forced the issue

Killed in the “stinky badges” scene

Letter (4th) in his pocket from his wife convincing him to come home from prospecting: “we already found life’s real treasure”

IN THE END, Bogart was (acting out of character?) and was willing to kill a stranger, a friend(s). His paranoia led to his demise (death)

Because of his “treasure” it impacted his decision making process (& acted out of character)

QUESTION: Where the buzzards circling?

What did Bogart focus on? What was his treasure? ($)

What happened in the end?

Did he need “Stinky Badges”?

QUESTION: What is your treasure of Sierra Madre?

What are you willing to die for?

What’s your focus/goal/primary purpose?

Core Values?

But what about our question this morning:

PASSING OF THE PEACE

What do you do when the buzzards are circling?

QUESTION: Do you act out of character when the buzzards are circling?

Or, do you remain true to yourself?

QUESTION: When the buzzards were circling what did you do?

What gave you relief?

Where was God? Where were your friends?

BOGART Vs MOTHER THERESA

Mother Theresa focused on God and others (Mt 25: 31 -46)

QUESTION: DOES A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

HELP US WHEN THE BUZZARDS ARE CIRCLING?

POINT: Matthew 6: 21 & 24; help us to focus on what is most important:

Our Relationship with God

We are to keep our focus on God, no matter what.

Even when the buzzards are circling and life is unbearable

QUESTION: If the greatest Commandment helps us when the buzzards are circling how about the second?

QUESTION: Does having a good relationship with others, help us when the buzzards are circling?

QUESTION: Does having a good relationship with the self, help us when the buzzards are circling?

If we do not have good boundaries, then our identity is vulnerable to vultures. People will tend to define who we are; instead of us defining who we are. When others define us and we abide by their definition; then the problem may arise that we will be over extended. When we are over extended it leads to too many irons in the fire which can lead to burnout.

Burnout sometimes is the result of our own choices. Choices that are the result of being defined by others and not our self. When burnout hits, we are no use to ourselves and others. With the continuation of burnout we may feel like a corpse, dead to the world. When this happens, the vultures come.

POINT: We can avoid some of the reasons the buzzards circle if we maintain good boundaries by keeping first things first and focusing on our primary purpose. This helps us to develop good boundaries.

EXAMPLE OF GOOD BOUNDARIES

SCRIPTURE: Acts 6

In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."

5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

QUESTION: What would have happened if they didn’t? If they allowed the request of the Grecian Jews and they complied with their request and over looked the widows.

POINT: The Apostles knew who they were. They knew their “Job” (Ministry & Life) Description. as much as they wanted to say “yes” they said “no” because their purpose, their gaol was to remain in relationship with God and their purpose as apostles (teaching).

SCRIPTURE: I Corinthians 12 - all ministries (jobs) are important

QUESTION: have you ever been placed in the situation like the apostles, the need is great, but you are force either to remain in harmony with your ultimate purpose or abandon that ultimate purpose and follow after secondary important needs?

TO REMAIN TRUE TO YOUR SELF - You must KNOW THYSELF

and to maintain those BOUNDARIES

SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO KNOW THYSELF & MAINTAIN BOUNDARIES

  1. Know Thyself

Become aware of who you are. What are your feelings? Thoughts? Why do you respond that way (example: if you say “yes” but not receiving enough accolades and as a result become angry; are you aware of your motives?)

Challenge: Keep aware of how often you are angry this week and ask: why?

Scripture: Proverbs 15:22 “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

Enlist a friend(s) who can with GRACE and TRUTH and is willing to invest the time to help you to know thyself.

2. Define Yourself

One tool is a Mission & Vision Statement that defines your purpose. This purpose is rooted in what one values. The apostles had a mission statement this helps with our decision making, when to say “yes” (who you are) and when to say “no” (who you are not). This is one way to develop the “no” muscle that is extremely important not to over extend (Acts 6:?). Know your limits (resources). One cannot have and do it all.

  1. Stop Blaming Others & Playing the Victim

No one is making you. The lack of knowing thyself and an undeveloped mission statement allows ourselves to become vulnerable to the winds of others. It is our responsibility to take charge of ourselves (to be proactive and not reactive). This requires an intense honesty.

POINT: Work the plan

CHALLENGE

To have the kind of relationship with God and others that will walk with you when the buzzards are circling.

Boundaries

October 11, 2009

BULLETIN COVER

QUESTION: Have you ever felt like the person on the bulletin cover?

What do you see?

How can this happen?

COMPROMISE: (many definitions) “sell out” “abandon”

Have you ever compromised your self?

With inappropriate boundaries our actions are not in harmony

with our identity and as a result we get tangled up

Identity issue: who are you?

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Scripture: Romans 7:14 - 21

Question: Do you know anyone who says one thing and does the other?

PURPOSE OF LIFE - RELATIONSHIP

GREATEST COMMANDMENT: Love God

SECOND GREATEST COMMANDMENT: Love Others

In other words, getting CONNECTED with GOD, OTHERS and SELF

VISION: Let us grow in our relationship with God, others and self

TEMPTATION: How much do you bond with the other?

Is there a danger to give too much of oneself and have nothing left over?

Intro

Continuing our sermon series on: Changes That Heal.

The focus: Boundaries.,

INTRODUCTION TO MATTHEW

Matthew, the author of Matthew, focuses more on the theological concept that is found in (7:21)

Not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of the father in heaven.

MATTHEW: Sermon on the Mount (is about action) and Sheep from Goats based

on those who served the needs of the weak (action).

ISSUE: It’s not only what we say that defines us, but it is also our actions

INTRODUCTION TO SCRIPTURE

Jesus is continuing the conversation with the clergy and their attempt to trap him by asking him “by what authority do you do what you do (21:23). This is the first of three parables that respond to the criticism and challenge (by what authority?) (21:23-27) of the clergy of Jesus’ day. This parable was spoken directly to the clergy who were questioning/criticizing (authority as into relationship to God) Jesus:

The clergy heard the message of John the Baptist, but did not repent (21:23-27)

SCRIPTURE: MATTHEW 21:28 - 31

A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' He answered; I will not'; but later he changed his mind and went.

NOTE: The son refused to enter the vineyard (Israel) and then decided.

He said “no” his actions said “yes”

The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I go, sir'; but he did not go.

NOTE: He said “yes” his actions said “no”

Which of the two did the will of his father?

Jesus directs this question to the clergy

QUESTION: Which action declares obedience (relationship) to God

NOTE: both sons responded immediately to the Father’s request

both changed their mind from their immediate response

They said, "The first."

POINT: Only one acted

What matter most is what they ended up doing

We are DEFINED by our ACTIONS

Jesus said to them, 'Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you."

OBSERVATION: Where did that come from?

CONTEXT: This parable is about the relationship of Clergy with God

QUESTION: Why?

Because what matters most is what they end up doing

OBSERVATION: This is an insult to the clergy

NOTE

Pretend obedience versus Delayed Obedience

QUESTION: Which do you prefer in your child? Friend? Spouse?

NOTE:

The repentant son does the will of the father, and the unrepentant son does not do the will of the father and remains fruitless/unproductive (i.e. all talk and no action).

The culture demanded that children obey and honor the father (Fiddler on the Roof), especially when they still live at home.

QUESTION: Does each son know who they truly are?

IMPLICATION: The more we know who we are the more our decisions

are in harmony with who we are (ie. how did i ever get myself into this mess?

QUESTION: Does each son know who they truly are?

IMPLICATION: The more we know who we are, the more our decisons are in harmony with who we are

EXAMPLE: How did i get myself into this mess?

IMPLICATION: The clergy are called to obey their parent (Heavenly Father) especially when they still live at home (the creation belongs to God). This parable is a terrible insult of the clergy of the day.

CHALLENGE

In Jesus’ day, the clergy where the ones that were the unrepentant son, all talk and no action; whereas the people who were repentant (prostitutes and sinners included) where the ones that were in the will of the father

QUESTION: Which one are we?

INTERESTING TO NOTE

this is one of the criticism of non church people with church people (too many within the church have the outward appearance of christ but not the inward...

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. Mahatma Gandhi

OBSERVATION: There actions are not in harmony with the one who they proclaim to follow.

QUESTION: Can this same observation be true today? (“Unchristian”)

POINT

This parable is about how some folks who say they are going to follow after God, and about some other folks who say they won’t (prostitutes) by their ACTION (life styles), but in the end, they do follow after God

NOTE

I have no idea why one son said, "no", and did go; and the other son said, "yes" and did not go.

OBSERVATION

This does not just happen in the relationship with God; but also in the relationship with others. In life; there are those who do say yes and do not go and others who say 'no' and do go. Sometimes, there are people who say "no" and do go; change their mind out of guilt; whereas others who say "yes" change their mind because they are over committed.

Do you know anyone like this?

QUESTION

Why does this happen?

This Sunday we will look at BOUNDARIES.

Boundaries begin with identity issues. Who am in this relationship?

ACTON: The question is to act or not to act (Ecclesiastes) Boundaries determine

LAST THREE WEEKS

We look at BONDING and how we are called to "bond" in our relationships.

QUESTION: How do we bond with others and still remain an individual?

Being real to who we are (individual authenticity)

IMPLICATION: For if we don’t we will find that the relationship is too confining and not working (like the relationship with the first son in the parable)

THIS WEEK (and next)

Boundaries is where to draw the line in the "bonding" experience. Without good boundaries, we may fall in to the problem where people control us and our time and then we become over extended and risk burn out and losing our way on the journey of life.

SCRIPTURE TO PONDER

"...choose this day whom you will serve..." Joshua 24:15b

BOUNDARIES

Working Definition: are a line that marks a limit (border). It is the realization of our own person apart from others. It is the line that says what we are and what we are not. It helps to establish our identity. what we will choose and not choose.

QUESTION: When there are no boundaries, what happens?

WHEN WE FAIL TO ESTABLISH GOOD BOUNDARIES

We will be tempted to say “YES” to even though it is not time (Ecclesiastes)

TO ACT OR NOT TO ACT

Over Committed / Extended

Burnout

People run over you

lack of time

Can’t be the real you

Lack of Identity (this is me and this is not me)

Others control the person (puppet) (feelings: we are responsible for our own

feelings, taking responsibility for one’s own anger, etc.)

NOW BACK TO THE PARABLE

The first son (clergy) are to be people who say ‘yes” to God;

The second son (prostitutes) are people not following after God, but then

“wake-up” and begin to follow.

Implication: there was a change of heart

Why? TRUE IDENTITY is relationship with God

If we are created for relationship with God, when we have a change of heart

(direction) it is repentance and there is a waking up of returning home to God

(Prodigal Son: Coming home)

With the clergy (1st son), they answered to who they thought they were (identity) but they were wrong about their identity (they do not have a relationship with god through their actions, indicated by no action

their identity (lacked proper boundaries)

THE THEOLOGICAL ANSWER

THE RELATIONAL ANSWER - Acting to who we are (identity0

IN OUR LIVES (US)

ISSUE: Have you ever experienced a “change of heart”?

why does that happen?

BOUNDARIES/IDENTITY

IN OUR RELATIONSHIPS

SPOUSE: Has a “job” description of who we are in the relationship

US: We have a “job” description of who we are in the relationship

(and vice-a-versa)

PROBLEM: If the “job’ descriptions don’t match up (Family Camp)

NEXT WEEK: SETTING BOUNDARIES

CHALLENGE FOR THIS WEEK: Know Thyself

QUESTION: Who are you?

Authentic Identity begins with knowing who the self is.

BENEDICTION:

We are defined by our actions, Jesus said “they’ll know we are christians by our love”

OCTOBER 4, 2009 - World Communion Sunday

INTRO

Today is World Communion Sunday. Look at this altar table that Joan has covered with a variety of breads.

QUESTION: Do you like bread?

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Scripture: John 6:35 Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life”

Question: What does it mean to you when Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life”?

INTRO TO SCRIPTURE

Jesus just fed the five thousand with a couple loaves of bread and fish on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee (John 6:1ff).

LET IT GROWL (30 hours of fasting concluded with communion)

(physical/spiritual hunger)

POINT: Jesus finished satisfying the physical hunger & now it’s spiritual hunger

That evening, his disciples boarded a boat headed west toward Capernaum without Jesus (6:17). Jesus had departed from the disciples earlier in the day and went up on the mountain to be alone (6:150. Later that evening, while the disciples were still in the boat headed toward Capernaum, in the midst of a storm; Jesus came to the disciples 6:21). When the people became aware that neither Jesus nor the disciples were no longer on the eastern shore, they jumped in their boats and went west to Capernaum.

SCRIPTURE: John 6: 25 - 58

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"

26 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."

POINT: Focus not on the gift, but the giver

28Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"

29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to BELIEVE IN THE ONE HE HAS SENT."

30So they asked him, "What miraculous SIGN then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"

32Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not MOSES who has given you the bread from heaven,

NOTE: Biblical Model of Evangelism: Begin with the listener. It’s Passover (6:4). Moses led the people out of bondage in Egypt to the Promised Land (freedom). They were fed bread from Heaven (Exodus 16:4). Also, it will once again rain down bread from heaven (as a sign) when the Messiah arrives (2 Bar 29:9 & Midrash Rabbah Ecclesiastes 1:9).

32b but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

34 "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread."

35 Then Jesus declared, "I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE.

NOTE: Jesus using the bread analogy from the Passover/Exodus and is now reinterpreting it as he who comes to give life. Somewhat similar to the living water analogy with the woman at the well (John 4).

NOTE: This is the first of the 7 “I am” statements (bread, light, gate, good shepherd, resurrection, way and the truth, true vine). All echoing God’s statement in Exodus(3:14), “I am, I am”

NOTE: JOHN 8:58"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" 59At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

NOTE: the response indicates they considered Jesus’ statement blasphemy.

NOTE: Jesus once again responds to the needs of the people.’

POINT: Bread was the sustenance of the people Now Jesus is the sustenance of the people. We connect with God and Jesus and each other through the Bread of LIfe. Bread of life gives life, it gives Jesus, and we connect with God and each other through this meal

35b He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

NOTE: Just like the woman at the well, who will never be thirsty again (John 4:14)

36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.

NOTE: To often we are giving the solution, but we want it our way and do not follow the truth. Not all are wiling to admit their huger/thirst (Augustine’s idea of vacuum to be filled by God). The people are in darkness (John 6: 59 - 66). Let’s fill it with something else.

37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

41 At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42 They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"

43"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.'[d] Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, UNLESS YOU EAT THE FLESH OF THE SON OF MAN AND DRINK HIS BLOOD, YOUHAVE NOLIFE IN YOU. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." 59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

PROBLEM IN EARLY CHURCH (over CANNIBALISM)

Non Christians in the Roman Empire were beginning to suspect that Christians were Cannibals because of the Eucharist. Early Church Father, Athanasius wrote an APOLOGY to defend the Christian practice of the Eucharist.

INTRO TO I CORINTHIANS 10: 16 - 17

Which gets us to today, World Communion Sunday. churches around the world are celebrating this sacred meal.

SCRIPTURE: I CORINTHIANS 10:

16Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

PROBLEM

Some people don’t want bread, I can live without it. They do not pray “Give us this day our Daily Bread” (Lord’s Prayer) They are not interested in bread, they an live without it. So, they choose to fill their lives up with other things besides the Bread of Life.

CHALLENGE
